GETTING AROUND

Getting around St. Vincent and the Grenadines is easy. One of the fastest and economical ways to get around the island of St. Vincent is by bus. For superior comfort, a number of air conditioned taxis are available. Rental cars and motor cycles can also be hired from a number of operators.

Buses

Local BusTravelling by bus can be very scenic and will allow you to get acquainted with the island and its people as you travel from one destination to another. The public bus system is a privately owned operation. You can't miss these 14 seater buses with artistic designs and printed names which gives each bus its identity on the road. The main bus station is located downtown Kingstown near the waterfront and the market. All buses originate at this location and travel either to the Leeward (west coast) or the Windward (east coast) side of St. Vincent. Bus fare is EC$1.00 to most parts but may range from EC$1.50 - EC$3.00 on long journeys. Buses are in full operation from about 5:30 a.m. to 1:00 a.m. Monday to Saturday. Sundays the time varies.

Rental Cars

Air-condition cars and SUVs can be rented by the day or the week from local rental companies. Rates vary from company to company. A temporary SVG driving licence must be obtained (if not holding an OECS or International driving licence) at the Police Headquarters in Kingstown, St. Vincent or at any port of entry in the Grenadines. Production of your valid driving licence together with a fee of EC$50.00 is required for the temporary driver’s licence which is valid for six months. Vehicles are right-hand configured (U.K. and Japanese standards) and driving is on the LEFT side of the road.

Taxis

St. Vincent and the Grenadines has an adequate number of air-conditioned, unmetered taxis. You can flag them down or take one from the designated taxi stands located in downtown Kingstown, at the airport or at any port of entry in the Grenadines. Rates are very reasonable, however, you should discuss the fare required with the driver before you board the taxi.

Ferries run between St. Vincent and Bequia on a regular weekly schedule. There are also inter island ferry services between the islands of the Grenadines.
